LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane has today announced plans to establish an MLS franchise in Birr, Co. Offaly.
In a sensational move, the Republic of Ireland international is set to follow in the footsteps of David Beckham by founding his own club in Ireland.
The club will be called the Birr Icedogs and plans are afoot for the construction of a 15,000 all-seater stadium on the outskirts of the town.
“It is well known that Birr is the coldest place in Ireland and the people are really cool as a result,” Keane said, announcing the news.
“They are crying out for a football team in Birr, since there’s nothing else there. Obviously it’s a football-mad town, so I’m only delighted to set this in motion.”
Keane is expected to be player-manager of the new team and it is believed that the 34-year-old is in the process of setting up the club’s first fan-club.
“I’ve always wanted to play for a team in Birr,” said Keane. “Ever since I was a kid. It’s a dream come true.”
